What is DMARC?

DMARC is an email authentication protocol that helps protect email senders and recipients from fraudulent emails like phishing and spoofing attacks. It builds upon existing authentication methods, Sender Policy Framework (SPF) and DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM), to verify the legitimacy of email senders. DMARC tells receiving email servers what to do with messages that fail authentication checks, either by rejecting, quarantining, or delivering them.

DMARC is no longer just best practice – it has become an unavoidable requirement since the likes of Microsoft, Gmail and Yahoo implemented stricter regulations that require the correct configuration of SPF, DKIM and DMARC. These changes affect email deliverability for thousands of businesses.
